Overall this was a highly successful weekend with a great turnout from all teams involved, great atmosphere and good standard of pool. Warwick took 3 teams, all of which did very well!
The third team, captained by Matt Bates, came out of a tough group including 3 first teams and went on to the Shield Final where they beat Southampton seconds 6-2 to take the title! This was really impressive seeing as most players had never played an 8 ball competition before!
The seconds had a tougher group but managed to finish top and progress through to the championship where they lost to a strong Nottingham 1st side in the quarters. Nonetheless, it was a very good performance from the 2s all weekend, captained by Sammy Valder.
Finally, the 1st team topped their group on day 1 and set up a quarter final match up against Lancaster 1, which featured former Warwick captain Joe Wall. Warwick won 6-2 and went through to play Nottingham 1st in the semi final. This as predicted was a tough game ending 5-5 and resulting in a 3 man playoff with the whole room watching!
The 1s were victorious in the playoff as Makhan and Matt won their frames, and were through to the final against Cambridge who had played well all weekend. Unfortunately the 1s fell short in the final as Cambridge came out on top to win the team championship.
It was a profitable weekend for Warwick fresher Matt Anscomb who was the winner of the individual shield as well as the 10 ball crash competition. Matt played brilliantly all weekend and overcame tough opposition in the form of Sammy Valder on his route to the final where he played Jason Halim from Southampton 2nds and convincingly won 4-0 to take the title.
3 Finals for Warwick and good runs in both the team and individuals across the board this weekend shows how Warwick are a force to be reckoned with this year!
We're really grateful to the lovely Bar 8 staff who looked after us all weekend and helped the event run smoothly. The tournament was run and played in by Warwick President Jonathan Ede who deserves a special mention for all his hard work and great cueing this weekend. Finally, thanks to all other universities for their involvement this weekend creating a great playing atmosphere - we're looking forward to other tournaments!
